What is being checked

The chain

Every receipt carries the hash of the one before it. The verifier walks the sequence from the start, recomputes each hash, checks each gate signature against the key history, and reports a gap, a reordering, an edit or a signature made after a key was retired or compromised.

The contract signatures

Each version of the terms was signed by a named person under their firm's mandate. The verifier recomputes the hash of the terms as written and checks the signature over it, so a contract cannot be altered after signing without the check failing.

The title chain

Where an electronic bill of lading is used, each endorsement must be signed by the holder at the time and lead to the next holder in an unbroken line ending at the current one. A double pledge or a skipped endorsement shows up as a break at a numbered step.

The witness counter-signature over the head of the chain is checked where the pack carries one. Documents themselves stay encrypted to their recipients — the verifier confirms that each document's hash was recorded on the chain, which is what lets you prove a file is the one that was filed, without the file ever being readable by us.

Why it works offline

The verifier is a pure function. It takes the pack and nothing else: no database, no key server, no call home. Every public key it needs to check a signature travels inside the pack, along with the revocation history, so a signature made before a key was retired still verifies and one made after it does not.

That is the whole point. A record that only the issuer can confirm is not evidence, it is a promise. If UIE stopped existing tomorrow, every pack already issued would carry on verifying exactly as it does on this page.
